Company Overview

This International Publishing House was founded in the early 20th century. Today, the company prints its flagship publication in more than four dozen editions in 21 languages, and it is sold in 60 countries. The company also publishes more than 20 magazines, a wide range of audio-video material, and approximately 50 million books.

The Challenge

The International Publishing House had been running Oracle database 8i and Oracle Applications 11.0.3 and needed to upgrade to versions 9i and 11.5.10 to better support the needs of its increasingly global business. Upgrading would accomplish this goal because 11.5.10 would provide the new functionalities that would allow the company to bring new business units on to its Oracle system. The International Publishing House had a strong internal IT team, but this team needed support in transitioning from 11.0.3 to 11.5.10. Moreover, with such a large and diverse business, the company needed to minimize risk and reduce downtime during the upgrade. The company sought a partner that could provide senior-level consultants who were capable of helping it meet these needs while working under tight time and budget constraints.

The Solution

ITC worked remotely to perform the bulk of the Database migration to 9i, creating four different test instances of the database. This incremental approach ensured that the company’s legacy applications would interface correctly with the upgraded Oracle system. The upgrade to Oracle 11.5.10 involved eleven modules, spanned 31 countries and involved nearly 1,000 end-users. For this reason ITC deployed PMO consultants who designed a centralized upgrade that minimized risk. ITC’s consultants helped facilitate a smooth migration of sales order data, ensuring that 4,000,000 records were transferred without loss. The upgrade allowed the company to support the UTF-8 character set, enabling the future incorporation of countries into its Oracle system. Using 11.5.10 also allowed the company to consolidate and eliminate several legacy systems.
