How to Face Oracle Discoverer De-Support

Oracle’s Discoverer has been a vital reporting tool for years, allowing non-technical users to access information from data warehouses and transposing it into a useful and customized report. Although the tool is an essential component to running an effective business, there are many limitations to relying on Discoverer in 2015.The last update to Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer product was R11.1.1.7.0 in 2013 which only provided bug fixes and no major features.  Premier support of Discover ended in June of 2014 and Extended Support ends in June of 2017.

Limitations of Discoverer

Discoverer is comprised of two main tools, Oracle BI Discoverer Plus, a web tool that allows users to build reports, and Oracle BI Discoverer Viewer where those reports can be viewed. One of the main reasoning for this two-point system is optimizing efficiency, which makes Discoverer Viewer a more agile platform and reduces network traffic. However, the system as a whole is rather cumbersome and requires multiple logins, page navigations, mouse clicks and overall redundancy. Discoverer also does not support any dashboard functionality and can only be used on a desktop platform.

Today’s industry standards require much more than what Discoverer has to offer. A reporting tool needs to be agile, intuitive, and easily customizable to suit all business needs. Now is a productive time to consider the next step in your company’s reporting.
