How UPK Developers Benefit from Oracle OUM when Supporting ERP Deployments

How UPK Developers Benefit from Oracle OUM when Supporting ERP Deployments
Industry veterans often times think that training is something that comes at the end of an ERP implementation or upgrade. This is one case where the conventional wisdom is mistaken.

In most well-run projects, changes to existing processes and/or future processes are identified at the very beginning, and training developers should use these process definitions to their full advantage.  Failure to take training needs into consideration at the very beginning of a project almost inevitably leads to competency challenges on the part of end-users.  In fact, businesses unfortunately sometimes fail to incorporate training into the Oracle Unified Method (OUM), which is the replacement methodology for Oracle AIM (Application Implement Methodology).

What is OUM (Oracle Unified Method ) and how it can support the planning and delivery of training using UPK?
OUM is Oracle’s standards-based method that enables the entire Enterprise Information Technology (IT) lifecycle.  Oracle Corporation developed OUM to provide a single, uniform implementation methodology that would cover its entire family of ERP solutions, including Fusion Applications, Oracle E-Business Suite PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, and Seibel. OUM provides an implementation approach that is rapid, broadly adaptive, and business-focused.  OUM includes a comprehensive project management framework and materials to support Oracle’s growing focus on enterprise-level IT strategy, architecture, and governance.  OUM also defines operational framework that helps anticipate critical project needs and dependencies. (Oracle White Paper, June 2013, Oracle Unified Method (OUM) Oracle’s Full Lifecycle Method for Deploying Oracle-Based Business Solutions)
Companies using OUM to as their ERP project management methodology have an advantage in that it makes the business requirement identification and business process mapping predictable, making it easier to incorporate training into your ERP project. This task will be made even easier if you’re using Oracle UPK to support your ERP training, because much of the OUM (and even old AIM) documentation is readily adaptable by the UPK. Here are a few documents that User Productivity Kit (UPK) Training Developers should contemplate using as “tools” and incorporate into their training plans/curriculum are listed below:

Business Processes (BP)
BP.080 – Future Process model – A future process and design document that, when written right, should clearly explain to even a non-Oracle person how the business processes will look following the implementation.  The complete BP.080 should include process flow diagrams and processes that function of the business that it will support.

Requirements Definition (RD)
RD.030 – Develop Future Business Process Model – Called the Process and Mapping Summary and can be used for developing UPK content in the beginning phases of training.  The RD.030 normally consisted of embedded Vision process flows containing logs, processing lists, and diagrams.
The following are additional OUM deliverables that may be useful to UPK developers who are building training content:
CR.010 – Scope, Objectives, and Approach – Defines the project scope, objectives, and approach so there’s a clear understanding between consultant and client from the beginning.
RD.050 – Process and Mapping Summary which gathers business requirements with mapping.
TE.020 Unit Test Scripts – UAT Test Scripts
TR.010 Education and Training Plan – Assesses the education and training needs for the project team and user community also plans on the delivery based on responsibilities, interests, and skills.
TR.060 Project Team Training Delivery – Provides technical and functional application training to the immediate project team members.
TR.070 Develop User Training Materials – Produces the end user training materials and plans using UPK.
TR.080 Prepare User Training Environment – Either a new application is installed or prepares an existing application environment for end user training.
TR.090 Support Materials for User Training – The project team trains end-users following implementation of the new system.
