Is there a way to take pre-built content and use it as your base and report around that. How would you recommend doing this?
The pre-built content is available for you to use out of the box. Depending on your organization’s customization level, it can also be used as a launch path to create your own customized content. The way to do this quickly is through the UPK Developer functionality Re-Record. So you would use the existing transactions as a script to re-record against your applications. This does not only recapture your screenshot, but also gives you the option to add additional steps if your transaction is different in any way. You can also use the existing outline and the page and form field definition and scenarios to create your material.
You can actually use the pre-built content to do a fit-gap. Many organizations when preparing for an upgrade could use the tool to show you the deliver state from the as-is state. You may be able to find, for instance, that the PeopleSoft 9.2 customization you had is now a delivered functionality, so you will be able to make an educated decision on which contents need to be re-recorded using the pre-built content or created from scratch, helping you prioritize your tasks.

Which are benefits of using UPK for testing?
We have mostly seen organizations value Oracle UPK for testing in two things:
- Instead of creating the testing scripts manually within the testing suite product, you are able to record them in UPK. Instead of creating them individually you can upload 1500 in a spreadsheet right into the product, saving 40-60% time.
- Standardization. When you record an action or scroll, that navigational glossary of terms, it’s populated by the UPK product. The “click here”, “scroll down” legends are template texts driven by the UPK product. So not only is there standardization of look and feel but also of the terms.
- Elimination of human error. Creating test scripts manually may not be a given for a typical end user. So, using UPK record, capturing every step instead of creating it manually you can reduce the errors.
Well, we’ve seen a lot of different options, but what we’ve seen the best results when there is a formalized process in place. With the 11.1 version, there is a mode called Record It! that caters to a first level of recording for a power user or subject matter expert. They don’t need to know UPK up and down, but is a 6-step wizard that helps you record a transaction.
