Reporting Options for Oracle EBS R12 unveiled: your doubts cleared

In our webcast on R12 Oracle E-Business Suite Reporting Options, we had 95 users register to hear what information ITC could give about the different options users have in for E-Business Suite reporting.

It is important for any Oracle R12 user to carefully consider their reporting options as there are many tools available to extrapolate data from the many business facets managed with the Oracle EBS. Whether you’re tracking purchasing, expenses or even payments, the E-Business Suite provides you with the necessary tools to separate the data you need from that noise you don’t and convert it to useful, projected facts.

In our webcast, we had several questions about these tools and as always, we’re happy to share the transcript of the Q&A session.

In your opinion, what is the best reporting solution for most businesses? OBIEE?

No reporting solution fits all. It all depends on an organization’s needs. Some can use Oracle Standard Reports; FSG’s as well as BI Publisher with the E-Business and be happy with it. Organizations large enough to use Oracle E-Business Suite applications typically require some type of ad-hoc reporting capability if not a complete Business Intelligence environment. What tools they need and are able to implement will depend on various factors including: budget, timeline, available technical resources, ad-hoc query, etc.

How does BI Publisher differ between E-Business Suite and OBIEE?

In BI (formerly XML) Publisher the data comes from Oracle Reports and FSG’s. In OBIEE, however, data comes from answers query. BI (XML) Publisher which is included in the Oracle E-Business Suite can only report on Oracle Standard Reports and FSG’s.
The administration is handled as part of the Oracle E-Business Suite using the XML Publisher Administrator responsibility which is similar to the System Administrator responsibility. BI Publisher Enterprise Edition, included in OBIEE, is a stand alone product with its own administrative functionality to define sources of data for reports, user security as for who can access BI Publisher, etc.

What is the migration path from Discoverer to OBIEE?

If you are using the new 11g products for Discoverer and OBIEE, you can use a Discoverer report as a source of data for your OBIEE Answers report.
For 10g products, there are several options that depend on whether you intend to use the BI Analytic Applications or build your own reports and dashboards. If you intend to implement BI Analytics, review what reports they provide and identify any “unique” Discoverer reports that you might have to create manually. If you are not implementing BI Analytics, Oracle does provide a tool that can help migrate the Discoverer End User Layer with its data definitions into the format needed to implement into the OBIEE repository. The actual Discoverer reports are not migrated and would need to be manually created in OBIEE. However, if the data definitions can be migrated, creating the reports is much quicker. The migration process from Discoverer to OBIEE will require very detailed planning. Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further on an individual basis.

Can I use OBIEE to create reports and dashboards without creating a data warehouse?

There are two options for this. One is to create an OBI Answers report using SQL. This is a quick approach but must be created by IT staff. The other is to use Oracle View to create a data source that is recognizable by the OBI Server. This view can point to data in the Oracle E-Business Suite Application tables or custom Oracle tables. It is a good option to make real-time data available for specific reports. IT Staff would have to implement the View in the OBI Server, but users could then create their own reports using the data in this view. Please note that when using either option, the query response time will be relatively slow and you may be impacting data entry if you are accessing the online tables.

If I customize a Noetix View, will this view still work after I upgrade to a new version of my Oracle E-Business Suite Applications?

Noetix provides a “Certification” process allowing custom changes to their views that will work after an application upgrade. Noetix does require that the staff making these changes attend a class and adhere to a defined methodology when making these changes for better standardization processes.
Can Discoverer work with BI Publisher to provide better formatting options?
Discoverer can work with the BI Publisher Enterprise Edition. There are some technical pre-requisites for these tools to work together.
