Last week, we held a joint webinar with Oracle about Business Intelligence in the Cloud – specifically Oracle Analytics Cloud. During our Q&A session at the end of the webinar, the audience had a chance to ask a few questions to our presenters. You can find the transcript of the Q&A below.
If you’re interested in the presentation, you can find the whole recording and presentation slides here.
Q: What are the approaches for moving OBIA to the Cloud when the source is on-premise?
A: So, there are a couple of options – for Oracle BI applications to complete Oracle BI Lift and Shift, you can have 2 different approaches. You can move your data entirely to the Cloud, or you can have what’s called a hybrid solution. The hybrid solution is about keeping your data in your local servers, but connected with Oracle Analytics Cloud. This way, your BI content will be in the Cloud, but your data will be kept in your local servers. IT Convergence uses either Oracle Corente VPN or Remote Data Connector to implement this.
Q: When talking about moving to the Cloud, what can I expect to be different? Will I have the same tools and functionalities, does anything change?
A: The short answer is that you won’t lose any functionalities, and will have access to some other, newer ones. For example, if you’re using Oracle BI Enterprise Edition on-premise, you will have all the same features in the Cloud that you are used to, including BI Publisher. But, in addition to that you have a lot more features, you have data visualization, which you can have with OBI 12c (but with an extra license), so you’ll have it included but atthe same price.
You have the possibility to have the all of Oracle’s Data Visualization capabilities, which allow you to merge different sources, access machine learning capabilities, big data capabilities, and so on. In addition to that, you should be aware that all the new features from Oracle BI it will be released first in the cloud, and months later on-premise, so you’ll be accessing new tools faster than on-prem. In short, you’ll have all the same functionalities, with a couple new bonuses.
