Modernizing Legacy ERP Through Strategic Cloud Migration and Licensing Optimization

Cost-Effective Oracle ECC Modernization on OCI with License Repurchase and In-Flight Upgrade

Challenge

  • The legacy software in use had been unsupported by the product vendor for many years; no active vendor support for patching
  • Increased complexity in the remediation of issues within the unsupported software; resolution times were increasing without the ability to patch
  • Additional security threats required a more verbose security infrastructure, monitoring & threat detection
  • The business could not scale on unsupported systems quickly.
  • The costs for modernization were prohibitive; however, the cost for maintaining unsupported systems was increasing Y-O-Y.  Requirements for a modern environment at a palatable cost to drive the business for the next 5-10 years were necessary.

Solution

  • Capacity Planning & Licensing Strategy: License repurchase plan accommodating today’s needs negotiated between the customer, ITC and Oracle with aggressive discounting structures.
  • Oracle Cloud Migration: Performed inflight database upgrades combined with application upgrades on current OS versions directly onto OCI, providing for secure, modern, supported infrastructure and systems with a focus on optimizing IT spend utilizing OCI native services wherever possible.
  • Transition & Support: Seamless transition into ITC managed services post-production cutover using fully-supported software and technologies across the entire footprint.

Results

  • ITC delivered a comprehensive solution focused on modernization, cost control, and business continuity with Oracle Database, E-Business Suite, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) IaaS and PaaS services
  • ~90% cost savings by re-negotiating software licenses versus renewal
  • Four iterations of the upgrades and the migration were completed within eight months
  • Users are extremely satisfied with the upgrades and enhanced features of Oracle including the Enterprise Command Center (ECC).
  • Substantial reduction in break-fix support needs for workarounds that couldn’t be solved via patching efforts
  • Modern environment designed to accommodate the business for at least the next ten years
